I absolutely agree that the prospect of emotionless, mechanical, anonymous hookups sounds rather depressing. But this isn't new, or even very much more prevalent now than it was 30 years ago when I came out. There are better tools to improve your 'productivity' and get you hooked up faster, more efficiently than before. But there was never a golden age of courtly dating and romance, where factors like intelligence, warmth, authenticity, education, and integrity were considered along with physical appearance. It has always been a shallow, preening, vain, opportunistic, deeply restricted community. The key is to break out of that, stay out of the toxic clubs and bars, away from the ruthlessly monotonous Provincetowns, and find communities which reflect your values rather than just your orientation.
