The Very Gay Reason God Put Lady Gaga on the Earth
MTV announced their nominees for their 2010 Video Music Awards (VMAs) today, leading nearly everyone in the universe to ask the same question: "Wait, MTV still plays music videos?"
Alas, while the network might not be as heavy on the music as they were back in 1981, when nearly every other video was something by Rod Stewart or REO Speedwagon, music still flows freely across the network. And today's VMA nominees announcement made a little bit of history. Why?
Because Lady Gaga scored a record setting 13 nominations, the most of any musician in the history of MTV, accomplishing a feat that eluded Madonna, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, U2, Whitney Houston, Dr. Dre and a host of other musical powerhouses. Upon finding out about her record-breaking accomplishment, Lady Gaga sent her fans a message, with a special shout out to LGBTQ folks, who have themselves quite the new icon.
"I'm so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history," the Gaga said. "A long time ago, the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard. Together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth for three reasons: to make loud music, gay videos and cause a damn ruckus."
Consider the ruckus commenced. Because when Lady Gaga isn't giving a damn about LGBT homelessness, she's taking a moment during her concert to condemn anti-immigrant laws like SB 1070, which she denounced from the stage of her Phoenix concert this past weekend.
A full list of the MTV VMA nominations can be viewed here. Incidentally, the artist with the second-most VMA nominations just happens to be Eminem, no stranger to LGBT crowds, if not for a string of controversial anti-gay lyrics throughout his musical career, then for his announcement earlier this year that he's down with marriage equality.
