Will LGBT’s Turn Their Back on Obama?
Although I’m not surprised, I still find it interesting how every since he became elected, many from the LGBT community have continued to doubt the President’s sincerity when it comes to supporting the LGBT community…mainly because of the claim he hasn’t done enough fast enough. I also find it interesting that that is the same criticism he’s receiving from the GOP about the economy and other issues. He hasn’t done enough fast enough! Yet, I was under the impression I was living in the U.S., which unless I’m wrong, isn’t a dictatorship where one man lays down the law of land. I was under the impression we had three branches to our government which serves as not only a system of checks and balances, but also a democratic means of providing for the citizens of this nation.
But, I’ve come to the conclusion the President’s critics are hell bent on watching him “fail” and really are no different from the likes of Rush Limbaugh, who said he hopes President Obama would fail.
The latest round of shots being taken at President Obama…surprisingly or unsurprisingly, are over the repeal of Proposition 8 in California. Why? Because the White House hasn’t been vocal enough in support of the ruling that appealed the discriminatory law. But I have to ask, what did we expect? Was there suppose to be a fabulous party thrown on the White House lawn after the ruling? Did we expect gay pride flags to be unfurled from the roof of the White House? Why is it, when it comes to gaining equality, we’re so impatient that we can’t appreciate an incremental step in the right direction? Why is it that we sat idol for 8 years of the Bush Administration and yet thought that our rights would just magically appear…under the dictatorship of Barack Obama? Oh, that’s right, this isn’t a dictatorship and our rights have made more progress in the past 18 months than they did over the past 40 years…yet for some reason…it’s not only not good enough, it’s a reason to criticize.
According to a post on CNN:
Gay activists and bloggers and others unleashed a wave of criticism against Obama after a federal judge on Wednesday ruled California’s Proposition 8 — which outlawed same-sex marriage — unconstitutional. The reasoning behind the criticism, they said, is a lukewarm response from the White House on the historic ruling — and Obama’s stance against same-sex marriage.
Now, I have to ask, what possible good could it do for the LGBT community for our President to become nothing more than a martyr for the LGBT community? When it comes to criticizing President Obama for his lack of support, I offer this…SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!
Is it OK to keep working, keep asking and maintain pressure to prevent our progress from stalling? Of course it is. But the fact remains, President Obama has done NOTHING to prevent the progress of LGBT rights and equality. Repeatedly I’ve said, because it’s true, he’s the only President in American history to actively be an advocate for LGBT rights and equality. Yet it’s never enough. As I’ve also repeatedly said, we can’t afford alienate our allies. So a portion of the LGBT community has turned their backs on our President because they’re acting like spoiled brats throwing a temper tantrum in the grocery store because they want a candy bar. I hope that same portion will be happy when our only Presidential ally finally throws up the white flag and turns his back on us!
