SALGA Participates in 30th India Day Parade
Yesterday, Indian pride was in full swing during the 30th annual India Day Parade in Manhattan.
Over 60,000 attendees watched as the parade traveled down Madison Avenue marking the 63rd anniversary of India’s independence from British colonial rule. The parade was followed by a festival.
This year was a special celebration for the LGBT community however as it was the first time in 10 years the parade included the South Asian Lesbian and Gay Association. The decision to include the gay rights group was made last week by the Federation of Indian Associations.
SALGA member Shawn Jain stated:
“We’re very happy to be combating homophobia, to be showing the community that we do exist and that we’re good people, and we feel really good to be part of this and to be celebrating India’s Independence Day,” said . “You shouldn’t have to fight this hard for queer people to be in a parade.”
