Mexico Rules: Marriages Must Be Recognized
On Tuesday, Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled in a 9-2 decision that all 31 of the country’s states must recognize same-sex marriages performed in the nation’s capital.
The ruling does not mandate all states allow same-sex marriage and did not provide details as to which marital rights must be recognized, yet equality supporters are pleased with the outcome.
In March of this year, lawmakers in Mexico City passed legislation which legalized same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples, but the law was challenged by those who oppose equal rights for LGBT Mexican citizens.
The ruling that was handed down yesterday dealt specifically with the marriage aspect of the law, but the court will be issue a separate ruling about adoption which is expected later this week
