Is President Obama Really Against Gay Marriage?
It’s no secret that President Obama has spoken out against gay marriage, and many have suspected his stance is a political one as he knew a majority of the country also stood against marriage equality, but as pointed out on Change.org – Gay Rights, that wasn’t always the case:
But what’s not well publicized, at least not much beyond the LGBT press, is that there was a point in time where President Obama was a tremendous supporter of gay marriage. He said so himself back in 1996, almost fifteen years ago, in a survey questionnaire with a Chicago publication known as Outlines. Asked the same-sex marriage question (at the time, Obama was running for a state legislature seat in Illinois), then candidate Obama said “I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.”
But as I’ve mentioned several times over, I don’t think this opinion is really a slap in the face to the LBGT community. I don’t believe many step back far enough to see the big picture. If President Obama had supported gay marriage during his run for the White House, I feel certain John McCain and Sarah Palin would be leading our country down the path of destruction at the moment and LGBT rights, DOMA, DADT, etc., wouldn’t even be topics of discussion.
I think it was a smart political move, not only for Obama, but for the LGBT community. Now we have a President, for the first time in history, who’s willing to take a look at discrimination against the LGBT community. We didn’t need Obama to be a martyr for gay rights, we needed him to get into the White House so we’d finally have an ally.
Sometimes we have to look at what’s behind the big picture as well.
