Iowa’s First Lady Speaks Out for Equality
With the upcoming election drawing close, the rhetoric from the anti-gay politicians in Iowa is heating up.  Many of the GOP candidates, are banking on Iowa’s voting population being upset over the state’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage to win their seats, even though poll after poll has shown that the economy and jobs top the list of voter concern.
However, just because the anti-gay politicians are pushing marriage as the issue, those who support the decision to provide equality to Iowa’s LGBT population aren’t backing down.
During a counter-protest to NOM’s ‘Summer of Marriage Tour’ which landed in Hawk eye state over the weekend, and the governor’s wife is one.
Mari Culver, addressed a rally organized by One Iowa that had about 300 supporters in attendance stated:
“I’m a little bit nervous.  I’ve never spoken publicly on this issue, but I was asked, invited to attend and I readily agreed and wanted to share my thoughts with you.  Our state has a proud and a rich tradition of celebrating and promoting equality and civil rights for all of its citizens.”
Culver stated she opposed efforts to repeal marriage equality and constitutionally banning same-sex marriage.
Earlier at the same location, NOM was their to talk about preserving marriage as between one man and one woman and how this was an issue of preserving religious liberties, however the number of attendees was much smaller, with about 75 Iowans providing support
