GOP Candidates Ignore Gay Marriage Queries

GOP Candidates Ignore Gay Marriage Queries
Although both have been outspoken about their opinions regarding marriage equality in the past…and thus have opposed, two GOP candidates have decided to stay in the closet recently when asked point blank about the issue.
According to a post at On Top Magazine:
The sixty-one-year-old former Nevada assemblywoman boasts about her support for the state’s ban on gay marriage at her campaign website.
Yet at a business networking breakfast on Tuesday, she steered clear of these issues.
When asked by a man, “What about those of us that are disenfranchised from Social Security because we are gay or lesbian and consequently are not allowed to marry, not allowed spousal benefits?” Angle elegantly shifted the conversation from gay marriage to citizen empowerment.
She told the man that he had just touched on what’s wrong with Social Security: “It doesn’t belong to us.”
And according to a post on Minnesota Independent, Tom Emmer, the same guy who has Target in hot water over their political donations had this to say when asked about same-sex marriage:
“As a citizen I have a view that is well known. As a governor, it’s not going to be up to the governor. Whether it’s somebody that says they have to oppose it, it’s not up to the governor. It’s up to the legislature,” Emmer said. “And you know what, this election is not about those issues, this election is about the economy, and it’s about jobs.”
So what’s my take on this? Politics as usual. The GOP candidates are probably aware there’s been a public shift in favor of LGBT equality and so they’re opting to play dodgeball with the question of support or opposition. But don’t be fooled. They are against LGBT equality and will work, as they have in the past, to try to make sure discrimination is legislated. My advice, become educated and get out to work for those candidates that support equality. We have everything to lose and nothing to gain if the GOP sweeps the elections at the local, state or federal levels in November. It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work!
