Africa’s First Out Gay President Elected
It may not be something too much to get too excited about being the small independent territory of Somaliland is a state located in the Horn of Africa that remains unrecognized as a nation by any other nation, state or organization, but regardless, the nation with a population of approximately 3.5 million has elected its first openly gay president.
According to the country’s official website:
Somaliland has a budding tourist industry and is home to what is often considered to be one of the most interesting attractions in the Horn of Africa which is the Laas Gaal cave paintings.
According to reports, Ahmed Mohamud Silanyo, the newly elected President Of Somaliland, has been out for years and has never kept his sexuality a secret. President Silanyo has been with his partner for 27 years and they have three adopted children.
President Silanyo has vowed to lobby “vigorously” for international recognition of Somaliland stating:
“During my tenure as president I will vigorously fight for the recognition of Somaliland. The world must recognize our democracy.”
This is big news if you consider the widely accepted and promoted homophobia that plagues many other African nations.
