Actor Chris Colfer says he was bullied in school.
Colfer plays gay McKinley High student Kurt Hummel on the Fox musical comedy hit Glee, and is also openly gay himself.
A just-published Rolling Stone article titled The Best Characters in TV labels the actor a “scene-stealer.” In the article, Colfer recalls kids shouting “Fag!” or “Freak” at him in the hallways of his Clovis, California school.
When you're in that situation, you learn to think on your feet,” he said. “I'd always respond, 'Delinquent!' or some other word they couldn't understand.”
The 20-year-old actor reveals he grew up in a conservative town, the product of die-hard Republicans who sent him to Jesus camp.
I was the bottom of the food chain,” Colfer said, referring to being fat, gay and forced to wear braces. “Very, very frumpy.”
Colfer's portrayal of choir boy Hummel has won him praise from critics and an Emmy nomination.
