Will Luck O’ Irish Bring Gay Marriage?
September 26, 2010
Gay rights advocates in Ireland are asking their government to pass legislation that would legalize same- sex marriage after a poll conducted by the Irish Times concluded a large majority of the country’s residents support marriage equality.
The poll found that 67% of people believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, and 60% of those surveyed do not think gay marriage will in anyway undermine the institution of marriage.
The poll was conducted in August and approximately 1,000 people at 100 sampling points participated to make sure that various demographics were covered.
Moninne Griffith, director of Marriage Equality, said the findings provide stable proof that Irish citizens are:
“keenly aware that the current exclusion of lesbian and gay couples from civil marriage is deeply unfair and doesn’t make any sense in today’s Ireland”.
The poll also concluded that 91% of the people do not think that being lesbian or gay is a bad thing which shows the lessening degree of taboo associated with being LGBT in Ireland.
However, many government officials still insist that such a move, which would require a referendum, would be too divisive. But some, including Green Party justice spokesman Trevor Sargent TD say it’s inevitable the issue will arise. Sargent stated:
“Now that civil partnership legislation has been introduced, which delivers rights and protection across a range of areas, we must look to the next step forward in Irish equality – that of gay marriage – and the Green Party remains committed to achieving this.”
Will Ireland be the next country to surpass the U.S. in marriage equality for all its citizens?
