Scientology and Divorce } They Hook u Up to an "EMeter"

Carmen Llywelyn, the former wife of My Name Is Earl star Jason Lee, has said that the Church of Scientology makes it difficult for couples like Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise who want to divorce.
Llywelyn, an actress and photographer, married Lee in 1995 and she later joined the controversial church.
But when she realised the relationship was unravelling five years later,
she tells the New York Times the church made divorce difficult.

The couple formally split in 2001, the same year that Lee co-starred with Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky.

Llywelyn, 37, says the church recommends couples undergo unusual marital counseling sessions, at their own expense.
She revealed that she and Lee paid for Scientology approved counseling from a chaplain, also known as an auditor, who had them answer questions about their relationship while hooked up to a device called an E-meter which Scientology claims can detect unexpressed thoughts.
'You do it until the needle is flat, until the sign on the machine doesn’t read any more thoughts,' she said.
'They think that once you unload all these bad things, you’re going to fall madly back in love with each other.’

Llewelyn also claims couples are sometimes pressured to use in-house divorce lawyers.
'Scientologists aren’t allowed to sue each other,' she said, because of a policy to contain any public disputes.
The church has received a string of negative publicity since Katie Holmes filed for divorce last month amid reports that Scientology played a role in the couple's breakup.
