Leominster Police Officer Fired After He Heckled Red Sox

The Leominster police officer who heckled Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford has been fired.

Mayor Dean J. Mazzarella announced this morning that Officer John A. Perrault would be terminated immediately for violating several Police Department rules when he called Mr. Crawford a “Monday” during a minor league game this month in Manchester, N.H., along with several other racially motivated incidents outlined during a hearing yesterday.

“As a sworn police officer, you are held to a higher standard,” the mayor said in a written decision to Mr. Perrault. “There is simply no place for your behavior in the workplace and there is no place for someone who exhibits such objectionable behavior in the Leominster Police Department, or any city department, for that matter.”

The mayor said Mr. Perrault's alleged comments have discredited the Police Department.

Mr. Mazzarella is the appointing authority for city employees, although Officer Perrault's lawyer yesterday said he would appeal the case to the Civil Service Commission if Officer Perrault was fired.
