'Four or five kids just came out of nowhere without any warning,' Mr Roike said to NBC.
'We didn’t think it was a robbery because they didn’t immediately ask for something. They just came out swinging and hitting.'
A woman and her boyfriend who witness the attack in the Eckington section of D.C. came to their aid and rescued them, scaring off the pack of teens.
'I have no idea who she was, just a guardian angel,' Mr Roike said. 'She saved us. Whoever she is, I want her to know we're really thankful.'

While Mr Roike suffered minor injuries, Mr Hall underwent surgery for his today.
Everything happened so fast, Mr Roike said, that they don't know what could have provoked the attack.
'We were probably holding hands. It could have been because we’re gay, but I don’t know for sure,' he said.
Mr Hall is a yoga instructor who does not have health insurance, so friends and family have set up a Facebook page where people can donate to his recovery at Howard University Hospital.
His parents, Mike and Gail Hall flew in from California to help.

'My biggest nightmare was that this would happen eventually,' Mrs Hall said. 'It’s so unnecessary in this day and age, when everybody could just get along.'
Police told Metro Weekly that they are looking for 'three black males wearing dark clothing.'
This is the second time Mr Roike has been attacked in D.C. but he insists the pair will not be pushed out of their community by violence.
