'Damon will CONTINUE and fight'

Ian Somerhalder has clarified his character Damon's recent motivations on The Vampire Diaries.

The show is currently building up to a big confrontation with original vampire Klaus and Damon. Somerhalder said that fans no longer need to worry where Damon's loyalties lie.

"Damon forged these relationships and now he has a stake in this town," he told E! Online. "He has relationships with people that he cares about, one especially, and now he is kind of forced to stand and fight, and that's what he's doing.

"It's definitely hazardous to his health both physically and mentally."

When asked whether Damon and his brother's girlfriend Elena might begin an unlikely romance as the series progresses, Somerhalder remained evasive.

"Damon is pretty much engaged in just protecting her right now," he said. "It's interesting to watch them."
