Mayor of Lima condemns Peru national police for violence against gay activists
In the face of last week’s incident of police violence at the “Kisses Against Homophobia” campaign, Lima mayor Susana VillarĂ¡n asserted that, just like any other group, the homosexual community has the right to conduct demonstrations in the Plaza Mayor, provided they respect regulations.
“They can conduct all the demonstrations they want, as along as they respect the rules, because this type of expression is a constitutional right,” she emphasized to the press.
President Alan GarcĂa expressed a similar viewpoint last Monday, stating that the right to organize demonstrations of this nature is part of Peruvians’ fundamental liberties, as long they are done peacefully.
VillarĂ¡n applauded interior minister Miguel Hidalgo’s decision to conduct an investigation of the policemen who used violence against activists from MHOL, the homosexual movement of Lima, during last Saturday’s event, to make sure this type of incident does not happen again.
“It’s okay to contain, it’s okay to discourage, it’s okay to use certain kinds of public intervention...but to hit people, to crack open a woman’s head, that can’t happen,” she said.
