Australian politician "horrified" at gay politician's anti-gay marriage stance

Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown says he is horrified at gay Labor frontbencher Penny Wong's opposition to same-sex marriage.

Senator Wong on Sunday said she agreed with Labor's stance on same-sex marriages because there was a cultural, religious and historical view of marriage being between a man and a woman.

Senator Brown, also openly gay, said Australia needed to move on from the status quo.

''Oh look, I was horrified (at Senator Wong's comments),'' he told reporters in Canberra.

He called on Senator Wong, Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to bring Australia into the 21st century.

''To somehow excuse discrimination ... on the basis of culture or heritage - are we going to bring back in hanging?''

Australia was lagging behind other countries by not allowing same-sex marriage, Senator Brown said.

''If Catholic Spain and Canada and South Africa can get rid of discrimination against people who love each other wanting to marry, then I think this great nation of our's can,'' he said.
