It’s Only About Sex, Nothing More or Less
Or at least that’s what members of the anti-gay religious right would like people to think.
According to reports, six Hawaiian same-sex couples are preparing to file a lawsuit in order to obtain the same rights afforded to straight married couples now that the state’s Governor, Linda Lingle vetoed a same-sex civil unions bill passed by Hawaii’s legislature.
Unlike lawsuits filed in other states however, this legal challenge isn’t seeking to legalize same-sex marriage or civil unions, but rather it’s asking for the courts to extend the couples the same benefits and responsibilities of marriage based Hawaii’s constitutional prohibition against discrimination based upon sex.
One of the plaintiffs in the case, Suzanne King stated:
“We continue to be discriminated against. We’re a family unit, and we live our lives just like everyone else, but we aren’t treated the same.”
King has been in a relationship with her partner for 29 years.
However, in rebuttal to the argument, Garret Hashimoto, chairman for the Hawaii Christian Coalition stated:
“I feel insulted. They keep bringing up Martin Luther King, black rights and women’s suffrage. This is not about that. This is about two males or two females practicing sex. It’s behavior. It’s no different from smokers or drinkers.”
So there you have it. Now we know. Gay and lesbian relationships are only about sex…or perhaps some twisted individuals obsession with what other people do in their bedrooms.
