“BearCity 2: The Proposal” I happen to be gay

 By Greg Hernandez

I am very much looking forward to heading over to the Ford Ampitheater with my pal Mark tonight for the Outfest screening ofBearCity 2: The Proposal.
A few days ago, I posted an interview with star Gerald McCullouch who is also one of the film’s executive producers.
Gerald, who I have on more than one occasion proclaimed is the sexiest man on Earth, is an out actor who has excelled on television (CSI, Pirates of Silicon Valley), on stage (Daddy, Jesus Christ Superstar) and in film (The Mikado Project, Locked).
I asked him about how being an out actor affects his career choices.
“Well, I’m an actor. I happen to be gay. And am proud of it. So if that makes me an ‘out actor’ – I’ll take it,” he began.
Then he added: “But that question kinda’ assumes all gay men are the same and all straight men are the same. I’m sure there are quite a few ‘straight’ roles that I have much more in common with than some ‘gay’ roles. It depends on the story and the person I’m asked to portray in the story.”
Gerald also touched on the debate over gay actors playing straight roles and whether being openly gay destroys the illusion for audiences.
“It’s my job as an actor to pretend to be different people,” Gerald said. “I see no reason why my hazel eyes, or my shoe size, or my sexual orientation has any bearing on my imaginative capacity to pretend to be someone who doesn’t have those characteristics. Some people disagree. To whom I say ‘sucks to be you.’”
BearCity 2: the Proposal screens at Ford Ampitheatre at 8:30 p.m. tonight. Click HERE for tickets and more information.
