Introduction by the Publisher:

Who would have thought? Cuba making advances in gay human and civil rights while the United States with the help of the extremist on the right and Trumpies in the Republican party (formerly tea party). This is a crazy world because if full of people and people change their minds as they age or new generations take over. In the U.S. we have a baby boomer elected by boomers who are not happy with democracy because they have to pay taxes which benefits are spread out all over and to people they hate. Somehow they think the alternative can be seen in many places in autocrats, communists, socialists, and theocracies to name the main ones. We don't have to become one of those to see how they work but these people are ignorant on purpose and many of them believe in religion and the part in which the world will become an apocalypse and that will induce Christ to come to earth again. In any of those scenarios of different types of government, people pay through their ears but get to own very little. The ones that said this nation is being converted in a socialist, those against social security are the first ones to stand in line to collect disability when they throw their back while hunting animals with guns they would not be allowed to use in any of the governments I mentioned.

They don't know what a socialist state is and they have forgotten how we got to get our nation. The original writers of the constitution were men trying to get away from the religious states they came from whether It was the king and the church in England, the pope in Italy, or the Protestants in Germany. Now that is not good enough, these people are using religion to exclude others. The best example of this is our Supreme court which is now ruling based on religion. This is going on here while there is an island 90 miles from our shores which took the rights of the people through a socio-communist state to now the people seeing what we have here and other nations the west want to be freer and with a better life which they haven't gotten ever. Now gay marriage which was to destroy America and we've had since it was discovered that people in this land that citizens and working for this nation are allowed to marry like everyone else those permanent unhappy white guys and their wives want to take it away because got does not like the way they think gays love each other in bed or to put it in plain language the way they think guys fuck in bed with other guys. But you go ahead and ask them if they ever do this or that and wait for the response with a machine gun up your nostrils.

Cuba's National Assembly on Friday approved a sweeping update of its family law that opens the door to allowing gay marriage, greater women's rights and increased protections for children, the elderly, and other family members.

The new Families Code will be put to a referendum on September 25 after being debated earlier this year in community meetings, where organizers said 62% of participants expressed their support.

That is relatively low by Cuban standards, where the recently passed new constitution was approved with 86% of the vote. Policy proposals in previous referendums have seen the support of about 95%.

The code promoted "love, affection, care, sensitivity, respect for others and the harmony of our families," Justice Minister Oscar Manuel Silvera said, presenting the code for the vote at the National Assembly.

Opponents of the rule change include many churches.

"What has been happening is sad because it is going to bring confrontation," said Methodist Pastor Henry Nurse. "It goes against what has been taught for many generations throughout the world about the true traditional marriage between a man and a woman."

Gay marriage, civil unions

The new code would legalize same-sex marriage and civil unions, allow same-sex couples to adopt children, and promote equal sharing of domestic responsibilities. It would also allow prenuptial agreements and surrogate pregnancies, though not for profit.

Parents would have "responsibility" for instead of "custody" of children and be required to be "respectful of the dignity and physical and mental integrity of children and adolescents."

Cuba is already a regional front-runner in women's rights. Women head up nearly 50% of households and makeup 60% of professionals, have free access to abortion, and can claim up to two years' maternity leave.

A Havana couple who have lived together for many years but were never able to have children, Ria Acosta Cruz and Gabriela Alfonso, said it was their human right to marry and adopt children.

"The opportunity it gives us is that of marriage. The fact of being able to opt together for certain things and certain legal procedures that we need as a couple and not as independent people," Alfonso said.

Acosta said it met their expectations as a family.

"We are a marriage. We have the plans together, the economy together. It is not fair that this possibility does not exist," she said.
