Clementi, the Rutgers freshman killed himself several days after the September 2010 incident by jumping off the George Washington Bridge. In doing so, he became a national symbol of how young gays can be bullied.

Judge Glenn Berman, who oversaw the case in New Jersey Superior Court in Middlesex County, is scheduled to sentence Ravi on May 21. The issue is whether Ravi should have to do time in prison, as the prosecution has urged.

On Monday, hundreds of Ravi’s supporters rallied on his behalf in the state capital, Trenton. The supporters, many of whom are Indian Americans, see the Indian-born college student as a victim of a justice system seeking someone to blame.

Ravi's mother told the crowd she believes the media should help her son. “They know he didn't get a fair trial,” said Sabitha Ravi, according to the Associated Press.

The protesters held up signs saying “No jail time” and “Drop all charges.”
