Leaked video of Qaddafi son’s first court hearing
Seif al-Islam Qaddafi, the son of the slain Libyan strongman, has appeared for the first time behind bars in a court facing charges of jeopardizing the country’s national security.
The video was leaked by Libya’s television channel Al-Jabal and rapidly spread across the web. Seif al-Islam, who was captured in November 2011, was addressed in the video by the judge in the first day of an anticipated long trial.
The session was held at al-Zantan Criminal Court last month and is scheduled to resume in May carrying over the same charges.
“You are here to receive a transparent and a fair trial, you have the right to hire a lawyer or the court will appoint one for you,” the judge told Saif al-Islam.
Seif al-Islam replied to the judge saying, “I shall rely on God’s support.”
Seif al-Islam Gaddafi is facing other charges by the International Criminal Court which had previously issued an arrest warrant against him and his father as well as former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senusi for human rights violations and crimes against humanity through targeting civilians in the violent repression of protests that erupted against Gaddafi’s regime in February 2011.
