Laura Bush Good Luck! but I want No Part of Your Gay Ad Campaign
Former First Lady Laura Bush wants herself removed from marriage equality ad campaign that debuted this week.
The ad, paid for by the TheRespect for MarriageCoalition, features the past words of such prominent Republicans as Bush, former US Vice President Dick Cheney, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell who have all spoken out in favor of marriage equality in the past.
Bush can be seen saying: 'When couples are committed to each other and love each other then they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has.'
Bush made the remarks during a 2010 appearance on CNN's Larry King Live.
But earlier today (21 February) the former first lady's spokeswoman Anne MacDonald told theDallas Morning News that Bush 'did not approve of her inclusion in this advertisement nor is she associated with the group that made the ad in any way. When she became aware of the advertisement last night, we requested that the group remove her from it.'
The spot is the first in a series in a $1 million marriage equality ad campaign timed to coincide with marriage legislation pending in a number of US states, and with two landmark marriage cases set to be argued before the Supreme Court this spring.
The Respect for Marriage Coalition, comprised of 80 organizations supporting the freedom to marry, said in a statement: 'We used public comments for this ad from American leaders who have expressed support for civil marriage. We appreciate Mrs. Bush’s previous comments but are sorry she didn’t want to be included in an ad. The ad launched a public education campaign that will now move to new and different voices that reflect the depth and breadth of our support.’
