More historic progress at our military academies!
West Point's Cadet Chapel hosted its first same-sex marriage ceremony on Saturday.
Details after the jump!
Military veteran and West Point graduate, Brenda Sue Fulton married her partner of 17 years, Penelope Gnesin.
The ceremony was conducted by a friend, Army Chaplain Col. J. Wesley Smith of Dover Air Force Base.
The ceremony comes a little more than a year after the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," legislation that, if still in effect, would have made this public marriage impossible.
Thought the couple actually live in New Jersey, that state still hasn't legalized same-sex marriage. (We haven't forgotten that veto, Gov. Christie.)
Fulton tells USA Today, "We just couldn't wait any longer."
On the choice of the Cadet Chapel, Fulton explains, "It has a tremendous history, and it is beautiful. That's where I first heard and said the cadet prayer."
Fulton is the communications director of OutServe, an organization that represents actively serving gay, lesbian and bisexual military personnel.
Zeke Stokes, spokesman for OutServe, says "We are thrilled for Sue and Penny, and along with them, look forward to a day when this kind of event no longer makes headlines and all Americans enjoy the freedom to marry and the justice of those marriages being recognized."
Congrats to the happy couple!!
And we applaud West Point for creating a safe space for same-sex couples to celebrate their love!
Pass the champagne.
