Bradley Manning Cage A Pressure Cooker 24 Hrs A Day
On today’s regular news I hear that the guards that allegedly tortured Bradley Manning deny doing so. Only the US press would take this as gospel or at least it so appears to me as I read different headlines. Yes, they are going to deny it. But they are not to get the benefit of the doubt. I think the government knows what went on and even if it didn’t (makes no sense) it can find out everything that went on.
The believe of this nation as professed by it’s government is that one is innocent until found guilty. One is not tortured or held in inhuman conditions. We are quick to criticize other nations whose conduct is one of not caring for human rights, but in this case at least we have an american that was mistreated while the government decided what they were going to do with him.
The country was in an atmosphere of terror and freight thanks to a government that was winning elections on how they were protecting us and how we were going to be attack any day. Anything was worth doing to save a whole nation! Hopefully we can look back now with open eyes and a sober mind. See the truths for what they are, not what being told by people that lie under the open phrase of national security.

Manning's cage in Kuwait was a real cage, and very, very small – about 8 cubic feet! It was normally used for animals, and located inside a tent. He was kept there all the time, except 20 minutes per day, and even fed there. He was forced to be awake at night and sleep during the day, from 1pm onwards, with average temperatures rising to 101 F. Manning had almost no human contact for 2 months and he had no idea of what was going to happen to him. That’s when he felt like his “world had shrunk”. His living space and perception of the world quite literally had shrunk. It was at this time he thought of suicide.
At Quantico Manning’s cell was indeed “luxury” by comparison: 8ft by 6ft and while on suicide risk, he was kept there 24 hours a day.
“Suicide risk means that I sit in my cell for 24 hours a day. I am stripped of all clothing with the exception of my underwear. My prescription eyeglasses are taken away from me. I am forced to sit in essential blindness with the exception of the times that I am reading or given limited television privileges. During those times, my glasses are returned to me. Additionally, there is a guard sitting outside my cell watching me at all times.”

“Life was not much better for me under the previous confinement assignment of POI watch. Like suicide risk, I was held in solitary confinement. For 23 hours per day, I sat in my cell. The guards checked on me every five minutes by asking me if I was okay. I was required to respond in some affirmative manner. At night, if the guard could not see me clearly, because I had a blanket over my head or I was curled up towards the wall, they would wake me in order to ensure that I was okay. I received each of my meals in my cell. I was not allowed to have a pillow or sheets. I was not allowed to have any personal items in my cell. I was only allowed to have one book or magazine at any given time to read. The book or magazine was taken away from me at the end of the day before I went to sleep. I was prevented from exercising in me [sic] cell daily. The guards would take me to an empty room and allow me to walk. I usually walked in figure eights around the room. When I went to sleep, I was required to strip down to my underwear and surrender my clothing to the guards. my clothing was returned to me the next morning.”

We also learned that the cell light was permanently left on. Manning was not allowed to turn his head away from the light or cover his head with the “scratchy” blanket while sleeping, and if he did, guards would uncover or force his head back towards it. When awaked at 5am, he had to either stand all day, or sit on the bed with feet on the floor but not with his back leaning against the wall. These, according to lawyer Michael Ratner, are “stress positions” and he specified that they are reminiscent of Rumsfeld techniques for breaking a prisoner. Ratner is also President Emeritus of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) in New York and Chair of the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights in Berlin. He is currently a legal adviser to Wikileaks and Julian Assange.
Under the name “Prevention of Injury”, this treatment was maintained during the rest of Manning’s 9 months at Quantico, against repeated advice from psychiatrists, one of whom stated, that his opinion had been ignored for the first time in 24 years of service. Manning was also forced to sign statements, given anti-depressants and other medications. His toilet was next to his bed and he was watched while using it.
The military are in the process of claiming that the ensemble of this treatment was “proper”.
Artist Clark Stoeckley, has been doing the courtroom sketches. Looking forward to hearing a citizen’s first-hand account rather than filtered spin from the distant press. thing2thing.com
