While the media and Mitt Romney's opponents reacted to the release of his tax returns Tuesday by focusing on Romney's Swiss bank account, offshore holdings in the Cayman Islands, and nearly $57K a day income, Rachel Maddow highlighted something that everyone else seemed uninterested in: The Romney family's Tyler Charitable Foundation donated $10,000 in one year to the anti-gay Massachusetts Family Institute—a Boston based organization that promotes ex-gay therapy. And The Advocate reported earlier this week that MFI paid for a public awareness campaign which portrays trans people as sexual predators.
In this clip from her show, Maddow includes CNN footage of ex-gay therapist Richard Cohen demonstrating some laughably absurd treatments, and points out that ex-gay therapy has been deemed ineffective, even harmful, by almost every major medical and pyschiatric organization. Maddow goes on to say, "What Mitt Romney has been funding as charity is actually advocacy of the predatory, quack industry that sells parents on the idea that you can ship of your son to a guy like (Richard Cohen), and he’ll ship him back to you straight."
Maddow's question for Romney is this: "Do you believe that homosexuality can be cured through therapy or praying? Because that's what you've been funding. Do you believe that?"
