As many as 40,000 people have downloaded hacked versions of the latest Android update as everyone impatiently waits for their phone to get the latest version of the operating system.
So far, the only phone to officially get Android 2.2, also known as the "Froyo" update, is the Nexus One, the only phone actually designed by Google but one of the worst-selling Android phones. Those with the Droid, Evo, and other more high-profile devices have been awaiting their turn.
But we all know that some people aren't patient, especially hackers, and around a week ago the first unofficial Android 2.2 ROM started getting spread around the Internets.

Peter Alfonso created a download packet for the Droid which seems to install a perfect working build of Froyo, which was spread around on Twitter and Bit.ly. According to the Bit.ly statistics, more than 37,000 people clicked through the download file. However, the download site is no longer valid.
That is quite a large number for a piece of unofficial software, which carries high risks and a sometimes difficult installation process.
Google has confirmed that Android 2.2 will be coming to most of the current Android models like the Droid, Droid X, Evo, and Samsgung's Galaxy S series.
