As the evils of puppy mills become better known, more and more people are turning to animal shelters to rescue dogs who need homes. Unfortunately, this increased interest in rescue pets comes at a time when people who have lost their jobs and their homes due to the economy, are being forced to give up their beloved animals.
But now, there is a new element: the Gulf oil spill. The spill has greatly increased the number of dogs -- dubbed the silent victims -- who are in need of good homes. And shelters are running out of space to keep them. They are moving a lot of the dogs out of the Gulf region, to shelters around the country.
If you have been thinking about adding an already trained dog to your family, make a visit to your local animal shelter and see how long it takes for you to fall in love.
