Rick Perry Comes Out As a Bigot That Doesn’t Even Do His Homework

As if Rick Perry didn't do enough to hurt his campaign by coming out as a bigot in hiscampaign ad, we have yet another bit of info to damn the Republican presidential candidateto being a bystander come election day. Turns out the dude doesn't bother to do his homework! His anti-gay campaign ad features the music of one Aaron Copland, who . . . wait for it . . . was as gay as Liberace, Elton John . . . need I go on? So much for using this campaign season to show us the measure of the man, huh?

Critics are having a field day with the discovery that music by Copland -- the Academy Award winner who is perhaps best-known for Fanfare for the Common Man -- showed up as background to an ad that proudly proclaims:

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a Christian, but you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.

Ah, the hypocrisy! Ah, the irony! And should we throw in there that Copland happened to be a . . . JEW?

Or should we just talk about the other major issue here? This was just another case of a presidential candidate shooting himself in the foot.

The campaign season is the short time that candidates like Perry have to show us what they're made of and prove they have what it takes to take the helm of the country. Putting out ads -- as Perry has done -- is something they're doing with relatively little pressure, at least as compared to that of life in the Oval Office. Picking the Copland song is an easy enough mistake . . . but it's not too much to expect the candidates at least dot their I's and cross their T's, is it?

Like fellow Republican Newt Gingrich, whose campaign is more than $1 million in debt because the candidate didn't keep his own eyes on the bottom line, Perry has shown with this Copland snafu that he's content with delegating the important stuff. Which wouldn't be so bad if he were up for Best Christmas Decor in Texas or some such. But he's not. He wants to be the president of the United States, and he can't even check to make sure that the music to his gay-bashing ad doesn't feature the music of a gay man.

The only one who was really hurt here? Rick Perry. At least Aaron Copland's family should get the royalties . . . and the chance to laugh all the way to the bank (here's hoping). Check out the video:

Maybe Perry should study up on the Copland songbook after all: looks like he's going to stay a common man for a whole lot longer. Would you vote for him after this?
