Given the number of superheroes who have a fondness for beloved gay activities like donning latex and embracing alter egos, it’s ironic (and more than a little horrifying) that so many Marvel and DC fans also happen to be homophobic.

Just look at what happened this week, when the internet blew up after current Spider-Man actor Tom Holland had a gay sex scene in the latest episode of Apple TV+’s psychological thriller The Crowded Room.

Based on real-life events, the show stars Holland as Danny Sullivan, a young man arrested for a horrific shooting in 1970s New York City. Over the course of The Crowded Room, an investigator (played by Amanda Seyfried) looks into Danny’s past in hopes of preventing future murders, leading to frequent flashbacks.

The most recent episode of The Crowded Room flashes back to an evening when Danny sports thick black eyeliner to the club, where he quickly catches another man’s eye. They end up having sex in the club bathroom, and later, Holland’s character performs oral sex.

Suffice it to say, not everyone was happy to see Marvel’s resident-friendly neighborhood Spider-Man enjoying a gay club hook-up. The homophobic backlash even led some Twitter users to criticize Holland’s new role using the hashtag #notmyspiderman.

But as plenty of other people pointed out, it’s pretty hypocritical to freak out over Holland’s fictional backshots given that previous live-action Spidey actors Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield have played gay roles in the 2000 film Wonder Boys and the 2018 Broadway revival of Angels in America, respectively.
