WALLACE: Well, I want to pick up on that, because there were reports that you and your oldest son, Tag, were frustrated with the Romney campaign, that they didn’t, quote, “let Mitt be Mitt,” that they didn’t let him show his more open, compassionate side. True?
ANN ROMNEY: Well, of course. It was partly — it’s true. But it was not just the campaign’s fault. I believe it was the media’s fault as well, is that he was not giving — being given a fair shake, that people weren’t allowed to really see him for who he was.
WALLACE: All right, what about the media?
(LAUGHTER)
ANN ROMNEY: I’m happy to blame the media.
(LAUGHTER)
WALLACE: Do you think the media was in the tank for Barack Obama?
(LAUGHTER)
ANN ROMNEY: I think that it’s — anytime you’re running for office, you always think that you’re being portrayed unfairly.
And, you know, we — of course, on our side believe that there’s more bias in favor of the other side. I think that that’s a pretty universal — universally-felt opinion.
It was entitlement overload in this interview. Mitt Romney blamed minorities who want free stuff for his defeat, while Ann Romney blamed the media and President Obama’s unfair campaign against her husband. Ann Romney is so much like Sarah Palin that it is almost scary. Palin has spent the years since the 2008 election blaming the media for her defeat in 2008.
It wasn’t the media’s fault that the Romneys were completely unlikable. It wasn’t the media’s fault that Ann Romney spent her time on the campaign trail torn between acting entitled to the presidency, and pitying herself. The media didn’t worry that Mitt Romney was losing his mind on the campaign trail. The media didn’t lecture the Republican Party that they were lucky to have Mitt.
The reason why Ann and Mitt’s denial matters is because it is reflective of the attitude within the Republican Party. After a brief moment of reflection, the Republicans have gone back to making excuses for their lack of popularity. It wasn’t that Mitt Romney had terrible ideas. Nope, the problem is that the media was out to get the Romneys. The Romneys reflect the belief within much of the Republican Party that there was nothing wrong with nominating a candidate who had no idea how regular Americans live.
Even after being soundly rejected by the voters, the Romneys remain wrapped in their own arrogance. The problem for Republicans is that Ann Romney’s excuse making reflects the prevalent attitude within the Republican Party.
