Rest assured, LGBT presence is evident and welcomed throughout American corporations, large and small… but especially large. Like Coca Cola for example – one of King & Spalding’s largest clients.
That’s why it comes as no surprise to learn that King & Spalding dropped their defense of DOMA this week, knowing the connections of the law firm. The big-gun legal group reaches deep into corporate America, and it doesn’t get more American than Coca Cola – one of King & Spalding’s preferred clients, also Atlanta-based.
While the famous soda company declined a public statement neither confirming nor denying the story, it’s rumored they urged King & Spalding to drop DOMA. A spokesperson for America’s favorite cola brand pointed to the company’s long-standing allegiance with the LGBT community including support for equality and diversity.
The historical act of the law firm’s decision to ditch DOMA prompted Solicitor General Paul Clement, a high-profile partner to the firm, to resign from his post.
“It’s careless disregard for its responsibilities to the House in this constitutional matter,” Clement said in a public statement.
But it wasn’t just private pressure that sparked King & Spalding to drop DOMA like a hotcake. The pro-LGBT supporters at the Human Rights Campaign and Georgia Equality, the largest gay rights advocate in the state, planned an aggressive PR campaign against King & Spalding, perhaps marring the law firm’s squeaky-clean image.
In fact, a public event was scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, but was quickly cancelled after the law group rescinded from defending DOMA.
Just shortly after King & Spalding dismissed DOMA, it was quickly picked up by a Washington DC boutique law firm popularly known for its buttoned-up, conservative lawyers.
Live on the Coke side of life? Don’t mind if we do.
