Murder in NYC: Carlos Castro, Foreign Journalist and Gay Rights Activist, is Dead

These are tough times for New York City hotels. Many of them are full of bedbugs. And numerous murders have also occurred lately at tourist destinations in Manhattan. There was recently a murder at Soho House. Now another killing occurred at the InterContinental in Times Square.

Carlos Castro, age 65, was visiting NYC from Portugal and staying at the InterContinental Hotel at West 44th Street, reports the NY Post. He was a journalist and a gay activist.

While the neighborhood outside this facility is a bit dicey in terms of safety, Mr. Castro probably felt quite safe inside his room. Alas it is alleged he was murdered there by his boyfriend, Renato Seabra, age 20. The two men had been fighting earlier in the day according to a person staying in a nearby room, reports the NY Daily News.

Mr. Castro suffered a violent death. His body was beaten and his head was hit with a blunt object. He was also sexually mutilated. His testicles were cut off. Mr. Castro’s body was discovered when a female friend he had lunched with recently tried to call him and did not receive a response. She went to the hotel and ran into his boyfriend there. He told her “He’s not coming out,” notes the NY Post.

The friend then alerted management of the facility. They went upstairs and discovered that Mr. Castro was murdered. The mutilation of his body adds a horrific element to this crime. Whoever killed him was showing a lot of rage.

Seabra is a male model from Portugal. He also had achieved fame on a modeling talent show in his home country. Seabra had cuts to his wrists and face when he went to a hospital. A nurse had seen an alert put out by the police about him and notified the authorities. The police have announced that Seabra is a “person of interest” in the crime, notes the NY Post.

This murder occurred on the 34th floor of the InterContinental. That floor will now be part of the gruesome lore of NYC. It is tragic that as the New Year is starting, so many people have already lost their lives. RIP Carlos Castro.

Part of the beauty of New York City is the incredibly diverse population there. Thus it is very sad to see that someone from out of the country who came to the city for a vacation ended up dying on his trip.
