Kent's First Gay-Friendly Football Club Launch
Ten players came together for the friendly match held in Danson Park using sports bags for goalposts.
The club called Bexley Invicta FC is now planning further kickabouts and five-a-side matches to be held in Bexleyheath with training starting soon.
The team have also organised their first fixture which will be a friendly match against GFC Bournemouth taking place on 20 March, with a social event the evening before. Times and venues to be arranged.
Founder of the club Brian Silk who has played for Leftfooters FC and Stonewall FC commented: “Kickabouts are a great way to get back into playing football.
“What was great about yesterday’s kickabout is that we had people there who had not played football for a while or were a bit unfit, but they told me they really enjoyed it and want to play more.
“There were also people who want to play their football locally instead of travelling to other gay-friendly clubs in north and west London. It’s only about 25 minutes to drive to Bexleyheath from Maidstone or the Medway Towns and just over an hour from the east Kent coast.”
But the club is not just about playing football says Brian: “Our supporters and helpers are integral to Bexley Invicta FC, whether they are cheering us on or helping out behind the scenes. The social side to Bexley Invicta is open to anyone who wants to be part of the club but does not want to play football.”
