Sad Story Worldwide:Italian chocolate tycoon and sponsor of AIDS education in Africa has died


Italian chocolate tycoon Pietro Ferrero was an “exceptional businessman” and was involved with several HIV-education for the children of South Africa, Western Cape Tourism MEC Alan Winde said on Tuesday.

Ferrero is suspected to have died of a heart attack while cycling outside Cape Town on Monday,

“His untimely death is a great loss for us all, and I wish to extend my sincere condolences to his family and friends both here in Cape Town, and at home in Italy,” said Winde.

“Pietro Ferrero was well known to be an exceptional business leader.

“Through his company, he was involved with several social upliftment projects dealing with HIV-education for the children of South Africa.”

The 47-year-old joint chief executive of the group that owns Nutella and Ferrero Rocher was cycling on the Llandudno coastal road when he fell off his bicycle and died.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said Ferrero could have suffered a heart attack. A post mortem would have to be done to determine the cause of death.

A passer-by stopped to assist Ferrero before an ambulance arrived, “but he was declared dead on the scene.

Ferrero, who was on a business trip in South Africa, had co-run the sweets company with his younger brother Giovanni since 1997.

Their 85-year-old father Michele turned the firm into a global leader in the confectionery industry after taking over in 1957.

According Forbes magazine Michele Ferrero is Italy's richest man, ahead of eyewear tycoon Leonardo Del Vecchio and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Winde said Ferrero was an avid cyclist and through the sport had “acquired many friends in Cape Town”.
