Prosecutors in Queens, New York, have charged a Rikers correction officer with a series of sexual crimes after he allegedly posed as a television producer to assault a 20-year-old woman. Anthony Martin Jr., 32, was arraigned on Monday in Queens Supreme Criminal Court, facing charges that include first-degree rape, sexual abuse, third-degree rape, and second-degree unlawful imprisonment. According to prosecutors, Martin contacted the victim through social media, claiming to be in charge of casting a new show, which led her to believe she was attending a legitimate audition.

On March 26, the woman went to Martin’s home in Springfield Gardens, Queens, expecting to meet other cast members and production staff. However, she found Martin alone, and when he began touching her leg, she attempted to leave, but Martin allegedly prevented her from doing so and raped her, according to the prosecution. The victim reported the assault to the police and received medical care. Martin, who was off-duty at the time of the alleged attack, was arrested on April 2 and subsequently suspended without pay by the Department of Correction.

At his initial arraignment, Judge Diego Freire set bail at $15,000 cash or $45,000 bond, and Martin has since pleaded not guilty to all charges. Currently, out on bond, he faces a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison if convicted. New York Supreme Court Justice Ushir Pandit-Durant has ordered Martin to return to court on October 18. District Attorney Melinda Katz, in a statement, praised the survivor’s courage for coming forward and emphasized her office’s commitment to pursuing justice in cases of sexual violence.
