New York City police said they arrested a man who raced through midtown Manhattan and struck nine people, including a police officer, just blocks from the city's New Year's Eve celebration.

Authorities said the 44-year-old man, who wasn't identified, was taken into custody at about 1:30 a.m. Monday on the corner of West 34th Street and Ninth Avenue after he drove his black SUV onto the sidewalk and ran over six pedestrians and an officer.

Police said the driver struck multiple marked police cars and a food truck, which tipped over and pinned a 39-year-old woman underneath it. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

The police officer and the other pedestrians who were hit were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

Police said they had observed the driver getting into a dispute with another person at the corner of Seventh Avenue and West 34th Street. When they tried to intervene, the suspect got in his vehicle and drove off.

Charges against the suspect are pending
