The Russian elite is ready to end the war but is against returning the occupied territories to Ukraine. Journalists from the Russian opposition publication “Verstka” came to this opinion after talking with anonymous interlocutors representing the country’s elite.

The elite also complain that vacations both in Russia itself and in “friendly countries” are becoming more expensive, the media writes.

The source reports that officials working in government and military circles are in favor of ending the war, however, on the condition that Kyiv recognizes the occupied territories as part of Russia.

Another part of the elite advocates the complete destruction of Ukraine so that Moscow can then “quietly and calmly” plan its future without Europe.

The publication also quoted the words of Russian political scientist Ilya Grashchenkov regarding the results of the Russian presidential elections. The Kremlin is in vain hoping that on the eve of the elections, the Russian elite will somehow become more active. On the contrary, it will be in a sleepy state, since everyone knows perfectly well the results of the elections themselves.

The elite does not expect any big changes in Putin's foreign and domestic policies. At the same time, the so-called “new elite”, which emerged after the annexation of a number of Ukrainian territories, understands perfectly well that they will not jump over their heads and will not achieve new gifts from the Kremlin, and the “old elite” understands perfectly well that their political control in the Russian Federation is limited.

Journalists have come to the conclusion that most of the Russian elite are “apathetic.” They have already learned and even accepted the social consequences of the war with Ukraine.
