Homosexuality is fully accepted in Western society, one would think. Unfortunately, however, there are still homophobic acts of violence against gay couples. A particularly shocking case occurred recently in Arnhem in the Netherlands: Jasper Vernes-Sewratan and Ronnie Sewratan-Vernes were on their way home from a party Sunday night holding hands. Something they never normally did in public. But that night, the couple dared to do it.

On the way home they came to an encounter with a group of young men they first mobbed the gay couple, but then physically attacked Ronnie and Jasper, including with a bolt cutter. Ronnie lost four teeth in the attack and had to be taken to hospital seriously injured, Jasper broke some ribs in the attack. Dutch police immediately arrested the four alleged attackers, aged between 14 and 20.

Solidarity with Ronnie and Jasper

The case quickly became a topic of conversation: Prime Minister Mark Rutte condemned the act and Dutch journalist Barbara Barend called for solidarity: In a tweet, she expressed the wish that all men in the Netherlands, whether homosexual or heterosexual, should show themselves once hand in hand with another man.

And the sympathy was not long in coming. Under the hashtag #allemannenhandinhand numerous men from the Netherlands and also outside set a sign. We think Really great reaction to a cowardly attack!
