'Spongebob Squarepants' Is Too Gay for Children } Ukraine
The Ukraine's National Commission for Moral Affairs is requesting that Spongebob Squarepants be banned from television in that country. The charge? According to a report from the commission, Spongebob is homosexual, and they want a ban on the television show across the entire country, calling the program "a real threat to children."
The program, which can be found on the children's network Nickelodeon, began airing in May of 1999 and was created by animator Stephen Hillenburg. It features a childlike sponge who lives at the bottom of the ocean and works at a fast food restaurant called the Krusty Krab and has a pet snail named Gary. The show does not specify Spongebob's sexuality, nor does it mention sex, dating or any other adult themes, since it is aimed at children.
A psychologist for the study, Irina Medvédeva, said that watching Spongebob caused children aged three to five to "pull faces and make jokes in front of adults they don't know, laugh out loud and repeat nonsense phrases in a brazen manner." So, in other words, it makes children be silly.
Spongebob Squarepants is not the only show under fire from the conservative commission. Other cartoons that they have criticized in their study include Teletubbies, saying that it promotes the "psychology of losers"; Shrek, because of it "containing sadism"; and both South Park and Japanese Anime because they contain "reincarnation propaganda" and "sexist propaganda" respectively.
The commission added that the programming listed above was likely to "create criminals and perverts." It isn't clear if the shows will actually be banned by the Ukrainian government or not.
