Romney Talks About Hi$ Mean$ and Amending Constitution Vs.Gay Marriages
Romney’s wealth has been a hot button for critics who portray him as out of touch with the financial plight of ordinary Americans. He was mocked after saying that “corporations are people, too” and most recently after trying to make a $10,000 wager with Texas Gov. Rick Perry during a debate this weekend.
But Romney, co-founder of Bain Capital, said he made his millions in the private sector and not in government.
“I think people know that I have very substantial means,” he said. “My guess is they know that (ex) Speaker (Newt) Gingrich has substantial means, Jon Huntsman does, Barack Obama does. I made mine in the private sector, some made theirs in the governmental sector.”
In a wide-ranging interview with Herald reporters and editors, the former Bay State governor also:
• Denied that his $10,000 debate wager with Perry was a real bet, because he knew Perry was wrong in alleging that Romney had changed his book to conceal his support for extending the Massachusetts health care plan to the nation.
“If I’d have said $10 or $100, (Perry would) have shaken hands,” Romney said.
• Expressed support for a constitutional amendment that could create a complex three-tier system of marriage — maintaining marriage rights for straight couples, allowing gays who have already married to remain married, but barring future same-sex marriages.
“I think it would keep intact those marriages which had occurred under the law but maintain future plans based on marriage being between a man and a woman,” Romney said.
• Shot down claims he has flip-flopped when it comes to climate change.
“My position on climate change is exactly the same as it’s been all along,” Romney said. “The positions I have four years ago are the positions I have today.”
He said that humans have contributed to global warming, but he doesn’t know by how much — and he’s not willing to spend “trillions” trying to stop it.
