Pit bull named, Star, seen wounded on street near his owner. .

Star, the pit bull shot in the head by police in the East Village two weeks ago, is recovering at lighting speed, officials said Saturday.
The pooch was shot after it lunged at cops trying to approach its homeless owner, who was having an apparent seizure at E. 14th St. near Second Ave. on Aug. 13.
An Animal Care and Control spokesman said that Star’s medical bills swelled to nearly $10,000 — paid by donations through a special fund set up for the wounded dog.
Since the owner, Lech Stankiewicz, had not reclaimed Star by 8 p.m. Friday, AC C was given legal ownership of the dog.

The agency expects to hand custody over to the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals when the pooch finishes its stint at a hospital.

The wild shooting was not the first encounter Star had with police.
On June 19, the dog attacked a 22-year-old woman as she tried to intervene when Star went after a cop at Second Ave. and E. 15th St. The woman was treated for bite wounds to her arms and chest at Bellevue Hospital.
An animal shelter, CollideNYC on E. Seventh St., helped reunite the dog with Stankiewicz two weeks later. A picture on the group’s Facebook page shows a muzzled Star in the owner’s arms.
