In comparison with other former Soviet countries, Scandinavian influences have been the strongest in Estonia.
There are no partnership laws in place yet, but anti-discrimination law has a clause about sexual orientation and general attitude of the society is quite tolerant.
Tallinn is the gay capital of Estonia and Sauna street in the Tallinn Old Townhas earned a „gay street“ title amongst the locals. This was the location of legendary X-bar (which is now on Tatari street) and Club Angel and Angel Lounge (now closed) right next door and thus is the starting and ending point for all Tallinn gay Pride parades, which usually take place in August.
There are no gay bars in Tartu, but they have a very active LGBT group organising monthly parties in different locations. However, as far as nightlife goes, you won’t find much happening outside those two cities.
Most hotels and restaurants are gay-friendly.
Though Estonia is fairly open-minded, it is rare to see signs of public affection, especially in smaller towns and Russian speaking areas of Estonia (East Estonia).
Medical staff and police, however, are friendly and professional, so do not hesitate to turn to them in case help needed.
