What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are parent cells which can develop into any of the three main types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Some hematologic cancer patients undergo a Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Transplantation (commonly referred to as a stem cell transplant).

A stem cell transplant can be used to infuse healthy stem cells into the body to stimulate new bone marrow growth, suppress the disease, and reduce the possibility of a relapse.

Stem cells can be found in the bone marrow, circulating blood (peripheral blood stem cells), and umbilical cord blood.

Types of Stem Cell Transplants

At CTCA at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern), Dr. Istvan Redei and Dr. Syed Abutalibperform two main types of stem cell transplants:

• Autologous Stem Cell Transplant
• Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant

Stem Cell Unit

The hospital's Stem Cell Unit is almost a mini-hospital in its own right, complete with an outpatient clinic, infusion center and inpatient rooms. If you undergo a stem cell transplant, you'll most likely be an inpatient at our hospital. The length of your stay will depend on which type of transplant you undergo and other individual factors.  

The hematology team will care for you through your entire continuum of care—from preparation for a stem cell transplant, through the transplant itself, all the way through your follow-up care. You’ll stay in one of our private, inpatient rooms and receive around-the-clock monitoring and care. We'll do everything possible to see that you and your family are comfortable throughout your stay
