Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm, had earlier demanded his resignation after uncovering the fraudulent behaviour.
Lane, overwhelmed by his dire circumstances, first attempted to take his life by gassing himself in a Jaguar bought by his wife with ill-gotten funds from the company.
However, when the car wouldn't start, he went to his office late at night and hanged himself on a rope.

Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks) was the first to discover something was amiss when she tried to enter his office late in the afternoon.
A shaken and guilt-ridden Don called on Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) and Roger Sterling (John Slattery) to help cut the body down.
It's the second suicide on this show - Adam Whitman, Don's long lost brother, also hanged himself.
