It 'Gets Better Video' Delayed Because of Dan Savage “Shit Bible” Comment

The Twins organization distanced itself from Savage after he said the parts of the Bible discussing homosexuality are "bullshit."
I (adamfoxie*blog) believe that we have to measure our words depending on our audience. When my company sent me around to give presentations, I could not speak to seniors the same way I would speak at a humanities class at the Staten Island Campus. I agree with all that Savage said, except since the community was getting together between religious youth and gay youth, the words should have been wrap in a diplomatic way. The milk already spilled hopefully it gives those that speak for the community in general more pause of how we talk to others about why we deserve equality in every field a citizen does.
There are times, particularly when faced with religion that I want to say a bunch of 4 letter words and sometimes I have, but not to anybody Im trying to show what diversity and equality are.
Lets go back to what happened and why there is hope that the video will come out and the damaged is contained.  I am not judging here, I think Savage is a good spokesperson and sometimes we can’t bat 100.  In many occasions he has.

In March, the Minnesota Twins said the organization planned to release its "It Gets Better" video in May. Well, May came and went without a team-sponsored anti-bullying video clip surfacing.

But fear not, says Kevin Smith, Twins director of public affairs. The video is still in the works and should debut shortly after the MLB's All-Star break next month.

The reason for the delay? "The Dan Savage controversy didn't help," Smith said, referring to the gay man and advice columnist who originally came up with the idea for the anti-bullying "It Gets Better" videos in 2010.

In April, Savage gave a speech at the National High School Journalism Conference in Seattle. He talked about how it's possible to "ignore the bullshit" in the Bible about gay people "the same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation," Savage said. "We ignore bullshit in the Bible about all sorts of things."

A group of Christian students, offended by Savage's remarks, actually walked out during his speech, and the controversy wasn't lost on the Twins. (Pardon the pun -- it's all too easy to associate "Twins" and "lost" these days.)

Patience is a virtue for Twins fans awaiting the organization's "It Gets Better" clip.

Said Smith: Savage's speech "got everybody riled up. We had worked with the It Gets Better staff not even knowing who Savage was, but his comments got a lot of people upset in a lot of different sectors."

"It wasn't a very good scene and it got national publicity," Smith added. "We want to make sure our message gets out there and isn't clouded by any sort of controversy, so we decided to take a step back and work with local people."

Smith said the Twins have reached out to sympathetic local organizations like OutFront, the Peace Maker Foundation, and Fox Sports North rather than work with Savage's controversy-tainted associates.

"We are going to do something on an anti-bullying message, and we're bringing in local partners to help us craft that message," Smith said.

As we said in March, we'll be sure to bring you the Twins' "It Gets Better" video as soon as it's available.
