Footballer Joey barton Arrested Outside Gay Club
English footballer Joey Barton was arrested for a fight that happened outside a gay club in Liverpool in the early hours of Monday morning (5 June).
British newspaper The Mirror reported the controversial Queen’s Park Ranger midfielder had been involved in an altercation, and he said on Twitter he was ‘sucker punched in the back of the head.’
The fight happened between the straight 29-year-old footballer and two men outside Garland’s night club in Liverpool city centre.
A picture of the incident showing a shirtless Barton being held back by police appeared on Twitter.
Barton took to the social networking site to thank the police for being ‘brilliant’.
He said: ‘Not planning on pressing charges as it’s not that serious. The police have also got better things to do with their time.’
Despite this the Merseyside police arrested four men, including the footballer, and brought them in for questioning.
A statement reads: ‘Two 21-year-old men were arrested at the scene in the early hours of this morning and another two men, a 20-year-old from the Liverpool area and 29-year-old from the Widnes area, were arrested this afternoon.
Later, they added: ‘Merseyside Police can confirm that the 29-year-old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail pending further inquiries.’
Gay Star News contacted Queens Park Rangers, but they declined to comment on the arrest.
Barton, who has a gay uncle, is one of the only British professional footballers to speak out for gay rights. In a documentary examining homophobia in football, he expressed ‘pity’ for his fellow professionals who are petrified of homosexuality.
