Comedian Kathy Griffin has given a pithy response to taunts from Sarah Palin calling her a 'has been', by saying the former Alaska governor had made her day.
Mrs Palin launched a new assault on Griffin in a TV interview, after it emerged the 48-year-old comedian will play the controversial former governor in the hit prime time show Glee.
Mrs Palin even offered her opponent up to Alaska, daring her to 'come pick on me.'
Attack: Mrs Palin has unleashed a new verbal salvo against her long running enemy Cathy Griffin. Palin labelled Griffin a 'has been comedian' and a 'bully'
Speaking to Fox News, Mrs Palin said: 'Kathy Griffin can do anything to me or say anything about me, because you know, she's a 50-year-old adult bully is really what she is.
'She's kind of a has-been comedian and she can do those things to me.
'I would just ask for respect of my children.
'As she had stated on CNN that her New Year's resolution was to destroy my 16-year-old daughter, that takes it a little too far.
'Kathy, pick on me, come up to Alaska and pick on me, but leave my kids alone.'
Mrs Griffin responded on her Twitter page telling Mrs Palin: 'U made my day.'
The comedian and the former governor have a long running history of tit for tat battles.
Mrs Griffin previously attacking Mrs Palin's daughter Bristol, poking fun at her performance on 'Dancing with the Stars'.
Last year, at a rally for U.S. troops Mrs Griffin said: 'She's the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight.
Apart: Bristol and Levi Johnston are separated. Kathy Griffin famously took Levi to the 2009 Teen Choice Awards
'She gained like 30 pounds a week, I swear to God, it was fantastic. She's like the white Precious.'
The comments received a round of boos from the troops, with whom Mrs Palin is a popular figure.
Bristol hit back at the jibes, in a statement she said: 'The audience's reaction to this 'comedian' spoke volumes, and the decent people I know would probably have booed her, too.
'I hope people didn't have to pay money to hear her negativity and criticisms.'
In 2009 Mrs Griffin took Levi Johnston, the 19-year-old father of Bristol Palin's baby, to the Teen Choice Awards, joking that the two were romantically engaged.
At the time Mr Johnston said Mrs Griffin was: 'Beautiful and funny. She's the star of the night.'
And earlier this year the controversial comedian even vowed that Mrs Palin's 16-year-old daughter Willow was next on her list of Palin family targets.
'I've already gone for Sarah, Todd and Bristol obviously,' she said, 'but I think it's Willow's year to go down.'
The attacks were prompted by what Mrs Griffin said were homophobic slurs posted on Willow's Facebook page.
Mrs Griffin is a well known gay rights activist.
It has been rumoured that Mrs Griffin will play a Sara Palin-like Tea party character in an upcoming episode.
