Marriage Equality Vote In Six To Eight Weeks: Gov Cuomo
by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
He passed a budget where few had managed to do so without great trouble, and now, he may be trying to part the Hudson. . .or at least pass marriage equality in New York. Marriage Equality New York head Ron Zacchi has said that Governor Andrew Cuomo has informed state LGBT leaders that he expects the marriage equality bill to be voted on in the State Senate within six to eight weeks. It may even be sooner.

The path may be difficult since advocates will need to sway a few Republicans who voted against the bill last time, but right now, they are facing Andrew Cuomo rather than former Governor Patterson. Cuomo strong armed the legislature into passing a budget ahead of schedule, and he is immensely popular in the state. This is not surprising given the recent announcements of a host of businesses moving to New York over the next two years.
He also has the fact that almost one in three New Yorkers support marriage equality.
Arguments against marriage equality seem rather absurd to New Yorkers, many of whom have probably noticed that their neighbors to the North and East have not been reduced to a smoldering pit of sulphur and brimstone yet despite having same-sex marriage for quite some time now.
