Eli Lilly, Cummings Against Gay Marriage

Lilly
Two of Indiana's most-prominent companies told a state Senate committee they feared their ability to recruit top employees could be hurt by a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage and civil unions.

Executives of Eli Lilly and Co. and Cummins Inc. argued Tuesday that the constitutional ban could hurt Indiana's image. State law already bans gay marriage, but supporters told the Senate Judiciary Committee that the amendment would prevent courts from overturning the law.

The committee heard more than two hours of testimony, but delayed a vote until next week.

The House voted last month in favor of the amendment. If the Senate approves it this year, it would have to pass the General Assembly again in 2013 or 2014 to get on the 2014 ballot.
